One of
England’s highest market towns at 850 feet (259 metres), Hawes is alive with bustle and activity and well known locally as the capital of Upper Wensleydale! Its maze of narrow streets and wide range of interesting shops, craft galleries, tearooms and restaurants offer plenty to tempt the visitor. There's even a traditional rope maker!
Hawes holds a weekly Tuesday market and the town comes alive as it is an opportunity for the local community to come together and stock up with provisions at the indoor and outdoor markets.
Not only does the town lie within the
Yorkshire
Dales
National Park?xml:namespace>, but the
Pennine Way, a 250 mile footpath, passes through here. It is therefore an ideal place to stay for long distance walkers. But if that route seems a little arduous, there are plenty more gentle walks nearby!
