Knaresborough

Dramatcially set above the River Nidd, the town is full of history from days gone by.

WHERE IS BEST FOR ME?

Once a royal residence Knaresborough Castle towers over the River Nidd, giving fine views over the surrounding countryside. In the castle grounds visit the Tudor courthouse which houses the town museum and take a guided tour of the castle dungeons and underground sallyport.

Take the woodland walk along the far side of the river to visit Mother Shipton's Cave, birthplace of the Tudor prophetess who was once rated as highly as Nostradamus for her prophetic powers. Make a wish in the wishing well before admiring the Petrifying Well, documented as being the oldest tourist attraction in England.

Walk upstream in the lovely surroundings of the Nidd Gorge, or stroll downstream along Abbey Road to visit St Robert's Cave, passing the House in the Rock and Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag as you go. Visit on a Wednesday for market day as it has been since 1310, held in the picturesque Market Square.
